April 30th, 2021

Deputy Mayor, Councilor Michael Thompson had the pleasure of speaking with a group of brilliant grade 5 students from Bond Academy virtually today (April 30th), invited by Ms. Seyna Ameree, the teacher of the Class.

The Class shared their April Highlights with Deputy Mayor, Councilor Michael Thompson. And students discussed many topics including parks, bike lanes, social media, online learning, Education, the COVID-19 vaccine, working with different levels of government, when businesses will open up again, and much more in the zoom classroom.

Deputy Mayor Michael Thompson shared his journey to becoming a politician and his experience working with the municipal government. He also appreciated all the tough questions posed by the students and he said he has “no doubt that they will all make a positive impact in society as they grow older”.

While understanding that learning virtually may be a challenge for many students, he said the governments “do understand the frustration by many parents and children”. He emphasized that we must do what is necessary to keep our students safe during this time. His shoutout is absolutely encouraging and motivating teachers and students to keep learning from home.

It is an extending and experimental learning for the Grade 5 class’s Social Studies. Bond Grade 5 class completed learning about the Role of the Canadian Government (their second social studies unit) and what it means to be a responsible citizen. The class has been discussing topics that include whether the voting age should be under 18, and whether a political party or an individual candidate is more important.

“It was an absolute pleasure!” Ms. Seyna Ameree appreciated the time Deputy Mayor Michael Thompson took to speak to the class. She said, all the Grade 5 students are looking forward to future discussions!
