Reflections and Hope

June 10rh, 2021

On Thursday, June 10th, Bond's secondary students initiated and hosted a "Reflections and Hope" presentation for Bond staff, teachers, and fellow students. Various students participated in this program: international students, local students, students in the BP1 program, and the 2019, 2020, and 2021 graduates.

These students shared their thoughts on how the current pandemic had affected their school experience but remained hopeful that things will return to normal and they can attend school in person again.

The presentation highlighted the talents of some of Bond's students, from singing and sketching to making latte art.

The second half of the program showed current students as well as alumni reflecting on their experiences at Bond, highlighting different extracurricular activities and events that they participated in and remembered the most.

The alumni's reflections all shared the same sentiment: their time spent at Bond, either short or long, was memorable because of the connections that they formed with the staff and students, and the various extracurricular activities that made them feel like a lifelong member of the larger Bond family.

The event consists of three parts: reflection, sharing, and connection.

Reflection

The COVID-19 pandemic affects everyone on the earth. Bond students presented their reflections on this topic. Human activities have adverse impacts on the environment, and what is the remedy? When will this fight between human beings and coronavirus endHow could we move on with this new normal?

(Grade 12 Casper Cheng)

(Grade 11 Ron Chen shared his digital drawing video)

(Grade 11 Issac Chim shared his coffee art)

Sharing

Although the pandemic put our life upside down and forced us to move courses online, students continue enjoying their lives after class. During the pandemic, students enrich their lives with singing and painting. Our students collected some songs and artwork from classmates. They invited some of them to share fun activities they had in their spare time.

Connection

When online classes have become a theme of school life for a while, extracurricular activities on campus seem unfamiliar to students. In this Reflections and Hope event, students connected their classmates online to share their thoughts on their studies and their feelings during the pandemic. Some alumni were also invited to share their memories of attending various activities at Bond and encourage Bond students to enjoy the rest of their school life.

Volleyball games, badminton games, basketball games, Christmas charity events, science expo, inter-school quiz contests, climate change movement, lantern festivals, prom...

Lots of activities are waiting for students to explore on campus.

“Accessibility to the teachers/staff, confidence building and extracurricular activities are the parents and alumni mentioned most at the Virtual Open House on Saturday, June 5th. I just want to let you know that your dedication to the growth of the students and the development of Bond is truly appreciated by the students, parents and Bond leadership." Dr. Charlotte Ge, Bond Vice President commented.

Behind the scenes

Holding this event is not easy. This event was organized by students in Grade 11 and Grade 12 Biology courses with support from Dr. Jacob and Ms. Luk. The main idea of this event is to reflect changes before and after the pandemic, and share activities and artwork students have done during the pandemic.

It was challenging to collect clips and artworks, so the director team of this event had to change strategies. Pauline, one of the students who organized this event, said, 'We started with the topic of pandemics and brainstormed some ideas to create this program. What I gained from this event is that I have enhanced my confidence. Thanks to this event, I don't think there will be any problems with impromptu speeches and public speaking at university in the future.' Pauline said that this event is also meaningful to her because she made many friends during the show's production.

"Thanks so much to George, Chloe and all of the students who put together an extremely engaging ‘Reflections and Hope’ presentation today,” said Mr. Davies, Secondary Principal of Bond Academy.

He thoroughly enjoyed seeing the talents of Bond current and past students on display. He wrote in his thank you email, “It was also great seeing so many students who were unfortunately not able to attend Bond in person due to the pandemic. I could not help, but notice the confidence in our students, which is a reflection of not only their growth, but the effective mentorship from our staff. Their enthusiasm for a school where their only experience is a remote one, is once again a testament to the great job that our staff do.

"Reflections and Hope" lighted up online campus life and rekindled everyone's enthusiasm for extracurricular activities! Let us look forward to returning to campus in September!
