Highlighting Remarkable Black Canadians

February 7th, 2022

It's important to recognize Black History Month in Canada, and around the world. There are many remarkable Black Canadians and Bond Academy Grade 2 Class shined a spotlight on Canadian athlete Harry Jerome!

Harry Jerome embodied perseverance as a Canadian athlete who, despite many injuries and attacks from the media, persevered through it all to break many records and won many medals for Canada. The Grade 2 class reflected on time when they show perseverance in their lives.

Grade 2 Class is also highlighting some other Remarkable Black Canadians during Canada's Black History Month. Some quick facts are shared:

  • In 1979, Dr. Daniel G. Hill and Wilson O. Brooks, founders of the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS), petitioned the Toronto council to make February Black History Month in Canada.
  • Under Mayor John Sewell, Toronto became the first municipality to designate February as Black History Month.

Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities.

The 2022 theme for Black History Month is: “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day,” which focuses on recognizing the daily contributions that Black Canadians make to Canada.

No matter where you live, we invite all Canadians to learn more about these communities, and how they continue to help shape the story of Canada.
