Just to give a quick summary of the informative presentation Mr. Chapelle, it commenced with an introduction to the group and society we lived in or connected with. He then featured the role of large businesses and companies, child pornography, and finally our action to prevent information leaks and cyberbullying. Over the presentation, the most intriguing and related point to me is the mistake to believe that the influence of information leaking is minor to our daily life as there is no purpose for others to obtain the information. However, as I have learned in the presentation, predators, hackers, even other countries seek personal information such as bank account, residence location of ordinary people in order to profit from scamming or selling information. There is also a multitude of people who like to stalk others. Therefore, sharing unnecessary information may lead to serious outcomes. Furthermore, companies use a variety of tricks to hold users’ data without their acknowledgment. The lengthy term of service that every user has to agree with is the common practice of multi-million companies such as Twitter and Facebook to profit from keeping the personal information when their social media services seem free.
To tackle the information leaks and cyberbullying, Mr. Chapelle gave us solutions as well. Despite not being able to completely disconnect from the internet, we, as users can minimize the risks by paying attention to passwords, app settings, choosing the safest method to socialize, and refraining from pointless communicating.
All in all, I gained a lot of critical and helpful information as well as tips and tricks regarding cyber safety and cyberbullying from the informative and professional presentation.
