New Basketball Camp Will Identify Players for Elite Travel Team
(Toronto, July 18, 2019)— High school students from across the GTA participated in a free training session for an elite basketball camp led by former NCAA basketball player and coach Wayne Dawkins.
“There is so much basketball talent in this city, and that was on full display today,” said Dawkins. “These young men and women blew me away with their talent and determination. The journey to success in the sport hasn’t always been easy in Canada, but things are changing. I’m thrilled to be a part of that and help the next generation shoot for their dreams.”
Dawkins is the founder of PHASE 1 Athletics and a former NCAA basketball player who has coached NBA, NCAA, Team Canada, and European pro league players over more than 20 years. Known for running programs that give youth opportunities, he’s worked with more than 200 NCAA, University and professional athletes including Tristan Thomspon, Steve Nash, Jay Triano and more.
The training session was an introduction to a new camp, which will run from July 22 to August 2 at Bond Academy in Scarborough. The ultimate goal is to create male and female North American travel basketball teams that will compete in the US and Canada. The camp will identify players for the teams. The project is a partnership between Bond Academy, Scarborough Basketball, and Dawkins’ PHASE 1 Athletics.
“Toronto’s basketball fever hasn’t broken, and we’re tapping into that energy to create something truly special for our youth,” said Phil Davies, Secondary Principal of Bond Academy. “Bond Academy is excited to host this unique program, which could ultimately help put our local talent in front of top agents and recruiters. At the same time, we’ll be supporting academic excellence that will serve all students very well throughout their lives no matter what career path they follow.”
At the training session, students learned some advanced basketball skills and tapped into Coach Dawkins’ firsthand experience about the focus and discipline needed to succeed in the game. At the camp, students will learn more advanced skills and participate in intensive drills led by Coach Dawkins.
Students and parents can find more information and sign up for the basketball camp on BP1 Academy’s website.
